The aim of this research project is to examine if and how the three compassionate skills (self-compassion, compassion for others, compassion from others) may enhance positive body image, which in turn might improve health related outcomes among young women and men, and among women in the transition to motherhood. To this end, we will conduct three studies. Through Study 1 we will develop and validate an Italian version of the Compassionate Engagement and Action Scales (CEAS; Gilbert et al 2017). Studies 2 and 3 will be conducted respectively on young adults and postpartum women in order to examine, through an experimental design, the link between the three compassionate skills and health-related outcomes (e.g., healthy eating, interest in cosmetic surgery, sexual wellbeing, loneliness).
This research will examine if positive body image might be fostered by the three compassionate skills (objective 1) and might mediate the link between the three skills and healthy eating (objective 2), sexual well-being (objective 3), loneliness (objective 4), interest in cosmetic surgery (objective 5) and breastfeeding (objective 6).
